Faces

Karin Jurick and her "100 Faces BUST-ED" project are huge inspiration source for me. Her work gave me the courage to draw and paint my first faces at the times of "Different Strokes". And she inspires me two years later.
I was cherishing an idea of portraits for several months, started today and would report about the results here.

My uncle's huge photo-journalist archive provides a lot of faces material. And there is no fear that the models will recognize themselves, at least for the nearest projects)).

I did this piece on craft paper with oil pastels in 3 hours from photo reference. Tell me what you think about it.

Did not draw anything in 2 weeks (business got all the time) and it felt so wrong. Please do not think that I forgot your talented blogs, I will be back soon. I promise.

  1. Der Irina,
Good work! Particularly, eyes and color use are very impressive. Just relax and have fun in drawing and painting. Results will follow "you", NOT you will follow results:).
    Best wishes, Sadami

  2. I agree with Sadami - color use and the eyes and expression you've captured are very good :) Don't beat yourself up when you can't draw or paint - just doodle when you can so you can feel yourself creating :)

  4. I think this person would like to have this painting of herself. It is very nice. I like the shadows on the face.

  9. Hi, I like the feel of this portrait. The blues around the eyes and the greens around the nose give the impression of a more creative approach to portraits. Which is a good, good thing.

  12. Dear Irina. I think that making portraits is one of the most difficult things to do, but you did a really good job, ...I love those "heavy" eyelids and the overall expression of the face , and the shadows you used to sculpt the face are just great! Big hug.

  14. Hi Irina! As they say around here, "you done real good, girl"! The eyes are what mess me up when doing a "portrait". People say that the eyes are the windows to your soul. Sorry that you have to work so long and so much. I suppose it's better than not having a job?

    Keep up the good work.

    Ken B.
